How to get to Heaven without trying

You can try your hardest and with all your effort and might, doing all manner of works, acts of obedience, and religious devotions. Still, it will not be enough. Even conscience will show through feelings that it is all insufficent, unsatisfactory, and empty. There is no work we can do to guarantee ourselves Heaven. It will only be flattering ourselves to think that anything we can do will get us to Heaven at all. Our works, in fact, no matter how much or what quality we esteem them, will never get us to Heaven.

Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On the principle of works? No, but on the principle of faith.
For we hold that a man is justified by faith apart from works of law.
– Romans 3:27-28 (RSV)

However, there is hope! The good news is that the way to Heaven is not by works at all but through the work of God’s Son Jesus. He was sinless and shed His blood to pay the full penalty for our sins. Moreover, He rose from the dead as proof of the new life we find in Him.

the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
– 1 John 1:7b (RSV)

The gift of eternal life is free with no added shipping or handling charges.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
– Romans 6:23 (RSV)

We receive this gift, not by works, but by faith solely in God’s Son Jesus who did all the work to save us.

Now to one who works, his wages are not reckoned as a gift but as his due.
And to one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly,
his faith is reckoned as righteousness.
– Romans 4:4-5 (RSV)

By faith, we are adopted by God and made Heavenly citizens.

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there,
the Lord Jesus Christ,
who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control,
will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
-Philippians 3:20-21 (NIV)
