1 Corinthians 1:11-17
11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
If water baptism were a prerequisite to salvation then Paul would have been baptizing. It is not a matter of man’s authority, such as Paul, Apollos, or Cephas, or what denomination we are baptized into. We are to be baptized into the authority of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as our Lord Jesus has stated as recorded at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. We are Spirit baptized into Christ by the Holy Spirit but we are water baptized in the authority of the Trinity Godhead.
1 Corinthians 3:3-11
3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
The formation of Christian parties such as “of Paul” and “of Apollos” and “of Cephas” all had their audiences who each chose their favorite and began formation of inordinate divisions within the body of Christ. While the “of Christ” party rightly clung to Christ Himself, they did so erroneously to the exclusion of recognizing the roles, teaching, and God given authority of the apostles. While non-denominationalism expresses a healthy attitude in the body of Christ, anti-denominationalism does the reverse and adds to divisiveness.
We also see that water baptism is NOT to be done solely in Christ’s name and authority as this Bible emphasizes the error of the divisions here. There is certainly nothing to boast of to baptize solely in the name of Jesus only since Jesus Christ, as God’s Son, is together with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Also, together with the apostles, we are Spirit baptized into one body. Water baptism is the symbol of that Spirit baptism which places us into Christ.
1 Corinthians 3:21-23
21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;
22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;
23 And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.
We are saved by trusting faith solely in Jesus Christ, albeit, this trusting faith is not to the exclusion of God the Father and the Spirit of God. The faith and expression of water baptism is what is important, not the denomination. As believers in Jesus Christ we are all members of Him as His body.
