Genesis 6:1-8 (KJV)
1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
7 And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
The term “sons of God” in the Bible has referred to angels and also those people who follow after God.
• Angels are sons of God by creation.
• People faithful to God are sons of God by adoption.
• Jesus Christ is the divine Son of God by nature.
Some have asserted that this passage refers to angels as the sons of God and taking human wives and with these wives having giant and wicked children. It is absurd to believe that God’s angels marry human women, as the Scripture says…
For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
– Matthew 22:30 (KJV)
Angels do not marry. In Genesis chapter 6, the sons of God refers to men who were followers of God and not to angels. If these were fallen angels or demons, they would not be the sons of God whereas they would no longer be imitators of God in His divine nature.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
– Genesis 2:24 (KJV)
Mankind is body, soul, and spirit. Angels, including also demons, do not have flesh, though they might appear as if they do at certain times. Therefore, they cannot be married and of one flesh with a woman since they do not have flesh.
What really happened was that the godly descendant line of Seth (the sons of God) married into the ungodly descendant line of Cain (the daughters of men) whose descendants became giants. These giants were said to have been either large people, large in battle, or large in numbers. However, excessively large skeletal remains have been reported to be discovered. This happened until the last man, Noah, who was the last of pure Seth descent, together with his wife and his 3 sons and their wives remained. All of the ungodly line of Cain were destroyed by the flood.
