Scriptural Encouragement

The Lord’s Supper is the Passover

ORIGIN

The Passover.
And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
– Exodus 12:13-14 (KJV)

The Lord’s last supper.
And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
– Luke 22:13,16 (KJV)

PURPOSE

To help us remember.
And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
– 1 Corinthians 11:24-26 (KJV)

To purify ourselves.
And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
– John 11:55 (KJV)

IMPORTANCE

God commands its observance.
And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
– Exodus 12:14 (KJV)

Paul’s estimate.
When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus.
– Acts 18:20-21 (KJV)

PARTICIPANTS

True Christians.
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.
– 1 Corinthians 10:21 (KJV)

The forgiving.
Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
– Matthew 5:23 (KJV)

The pure in heart.
Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
– Psalm 24:3-5 (KJV)
